Indian Coast Guard Dismantles International Oil-Smuggling Network Off Mumbai
The Indian Coast Guard has successfully dismantled an international oil-smuggling network after intercepting three suspect vessels about 100 nautical miles west of Mumbai during a coordinated sea-air operation on February 5-6, 2026. According to a statement by the Ministry of Defence, the operation was triggered after technology-enabled surveillance detected a motor tanker conducting suspicious activity inside India‘s Exclusive Economic Zone.
The investigation and vessel-movement pattern analysis subsequently identified two additional vessels converging on the tanker, pointing to a suspected illicit ship-to-ship transfer of oil-based cargo. Coast Guard boarding teams apprehended all three vessels on February 5.
The alleged syndicate transported “cheap oil” by sea and transferred it mid-sea to motor tankers in international waters, with sales and transfers coordinated by handlers operating across multiple countries. The vessels were said to have frequently changed identities to evade detection, while initial findings indicated ownership linked to foreign-based entities.
Vessels Seized and Investigation Underway
The three seized vessels are expected to be escorted to Mumbai for further investigation and then transferred to Indian Customs and other law-enforcement agencies for legal proceedings. The Indian Coast Guard is a maritime law-enforcement service operating under India‘s Ministry of Defence, tasked with enforcing maritime law, preventing smuggling and other illegal activities at sea, and safeguarding offshore assets and seafarers.
The service was established following the formation of an interim force in February 1977 and formally inaugurated in August 1978. The Indian Coast Guard has been actively engaged in combating maritime crimes, including oil-smuggling, to ensure the safety and security of India‘s marine resources and interests.
International Cooperation and Maritime Security
The successful dismantling of this international oil-smuggling network highlights the importance of international cooperation and coordination in combating transnational criminal activities. The Indian Coast Guard‘s efforts demonstrate its commitment to upholding maritime law and maintaining the integrity of global energy markets.
As the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, energy security remains a critical concern. The Indian Coast Guard‘s actions serve as a reminder of the need for sustained international cooperation to prevent illegal activities that undermine global energy stability.
