Abandoned Russian Shadow-Fleet Tanker Leaks Oil Off Oman
A Cameroonian-flagged tanker, reportedly part of Russia’s shadow fleet, has leaked oil off the coast of Oman, raising concerns about environmental damage to a protected marine reserve.
The Caroline Bezengi, an 18-year-old vessel, is believed to be carrying Russian oil despite sanctions imposed by Britain, the EU, and others. The ship’s owner appears to be a shell company in Shanghai, a common tactic used by Russia to conceal the true ownership of its shadow fleet tankers.
Risky Vessels Pose Threats
The Caroline Bezengi is not an isolated incident. Several high-profile incidents involving Russian shadow-fleet tankers have highlighted the risks these vessels pose to maritime traffic and the environment. In 2024, a sanctioned tanker ran aground in the Bosphorus after an anchor malfunction, closing the strait to shipping.
These older ships are more prone to leakage and malfunction due to their age and poor maintenance. The Caroline Bezengi’s exact condition is unclear, but sources cited by TradeWinds blame a limpet mine attack by Ukrainian saboteurs for its current state.
Environmental Concerns
The leak has raised concerns about environmental damage to the Al-Qibliyah island, part of Oman‘s protected marine reserve. The area is home to rare coral reef habitat, sea turtle nesting grounds, and a stopover for migratory birds. Oman’s transport ministry had previously warned the owners that they would face legal action if the stranded vessel and its cargo were not removed from the island by July 23.
Salvage Efforts Complicated
The Caroline Bezengi does not have war risk cover, according to TradeWinds, complicating salvage efforts. The bill for the cleanup, at least initially, will fall on Oman, adding to concerns about the environmental impact of this incident.
As authorities work to contain the spill and remove the vessel from the area, questions remain about how the ship became damaged and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
