Denmark to Enhance Environmental Checks Amid Concerns Over Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’
Denmark will intensify environmental checks on oil tankers in a key shipping lane linking the Baltic and North Seas to combat Russia‘s “shadow fleet,” Copenhagen announced on Monday. This move comes after a vessel believed to belong to this flotilla was linked to mysterious drone sightings over Denmark last month, closing airports at a time of heightened East-West tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The announcement follows concerns that the shadow fleet, estimated to include up to 1,000 ships, has enabled Moscow to keep exporting its crude oil for much-needed revenue despite curbs on exports. Experts and several European leaders also believe some vessels have been used by Russia to conduct hybrid warfare across the continent.
Denmark’s Efforts to Counter Russian ‘Shadow Fleet’
Denmark‘s Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke emphasized the need for enhanced control over basic environmental rules, stating that this will enable a more coherent and effective response against petrol tankers and Russia‘s “shadow fleet.” The move aims to crack down on suspected vessels used by Moscow to circumvent Western sanctions.
The announcement comes as Denmark‘s police have not ruled out the possibility that one such ship was involved in the drone sightings above airports and military installations in late September. That vessel, the Boracay, was later boarded by France and halted for five days. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday called France’s detention of the Boracay “piracy.”
Danish Industry Minister Calls for Action Against Russia
Danish Industry Minister Morten Bodskov emphasized the need to stop Putin’s war machine, stating that Denmark is using all available tools to counter this threat. The move aims to prevent further incidents and ensure the security of Denmark’s airspace.
The decision to enhance environmental checks on oil tankers in a key shipping lane linking the Baltic and North Seas reflects Denmark‘s commitment to addressing concerns over Russia‘s “shadow fleet.” As tensions between East and West continue to rise, Denmark’s efforts aim to maintain the country’s security and stability.
