Shadow Fleet Vessel Drifts Without Crew After Ukrainian Drone Attack
The 277-metre-long Arctic Metagaz has been drifting without crew since a series of explosions blasted the vessel over a week ago. The ship was reportedly carrying significant quantities of gas, heavy oil, and diesel fuel, raising concerns about potential pollution in the Mediterranean.
According to Russia, Ukraine launched “uncrewed sea drones” from the Libyan coast on March 4, targeting the Metagaz between Libya and Malta. The attack has been closely monitored by authorities in Malta and Italy, fearing a spill could cause fires, cryogenic clouds lethal to marine life, and widespread pollution of water and the atmosphere.
The affected area is of exceptional ecological value, with fragile deep-sea ecosystems and some of the highest biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin. WWF Italy warned that “the ship was carrying hazardous materials, which if released, would have devastating environmental consequences.”
Russia’s Shadow Fleet Under Scrutiny
The Arctic Metagaz is part of Moscow’s “shadow fleet,” a network of ageing tankers used to transport Russian oil and gas around the world, skirting Western restrictions. The vessel has been sanctioned by the United States and the European Union for its involvement in this illegal operation.
Russia’s transport ministry initially reported that 30 Russians were aboard the Arctic Metagaz, but they were all found “safe and sound in a lifeboat” by Malta’s armed forces. However, Malta’s transport authority later confirmed that the wreck was still afloat, sparking concerns about potential pollution.
Ukraine’s Naval Drone Strikes
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv has carried out a series of attacks on Russia’s sanctioned vessels using naval drones. While most strikes have been in the Black Sea, this latest attack marks a significant escalation, with Ukraine targeting a vessel in international waters.
The incident highlights the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the growing importance of naval drone technology in modern warfare. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact global energy markets and international relations.
