The French Navy has boarded an oil tanker in the western Mediterranean that is suspected to be part of Russia‘s shadow fleet. The vessel, named Deyna, was sailing from the Russian port of Murmansk and flying the flag of Mozambique.
French authorities had raised doubts about the ship’s registration and documents, leading them to stop the vessel on Friday and carry out checks at sea. After completing the inspections, the French Navy escorted the tanker to an anchorage point near Marseille for further examination under the orders of a prosecutor.
The operation was carried out with support from the United Kingdom, whose Defence Secretary John Healey stated that his country’s forces had helped track the ship and emphasized the importance of stopping such vessels in cutting off funds linked to Russia‘s war effort.
