French Navy Boards Suspected Shadow Fleet Tanker in Indian Ocean
The French Navy intercepted and boarded the oil tanker DF Peak in the Indian Ocean on October 12 over suspicions that it was sailing under a false flag and involved in illegal fuel trafficking, French President Emmanuel Macron announced.
The operation took place more than 450 nautical miles south of Réunion Island, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean. Macron said the boarding was conducted in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and international maritime law.
International Cooperation and Enforcement
— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) October 12, 2026
France’s Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin confirmed that the tanker was under French Navy escort following the interception. She emphasized that international law must be enforced and said French armed forces remained mobilized to combat illegal activities at sea.
— Catherine Vautrin (@CaVautrin) October 12, 2026
Sanctions and Shadow Fleet Links
The tanker is suspected of transporting sanctioned Russian oil as part of the so-called shadow fleet, a network of vessels used to move Russian petroleum and circumvent international restrictions. Such vessels have raised concerns over sanctions compliance, opaque ownership structures, insurance coverage and potential environmental risks.
The French authorities have not disclosed further details about the vessel’s cargo, destination or the legal proceedings that may follow the interception.
Previously, France had seized another oil tanker suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” on 23 June.
The operation follows a series of European efforts to monitor and intercept vessels suspected of helping Russia evade sanctions.
