Royal Navy Monitors Russian Warships in UK Waters During 72-Hour Operation
The Royal Navy conducted a 72-hour operation to monitor Russian warships and shadow fleet activity in UK waters, deploying three ships: Type 45 destroyer Duncan, Type 23 frigate St Albans, and patrol ship HMS Severn. The operation aimed to track Russian destroyer Admiral Levchenko as it escorted sanctioned cargo vessels General Skobelev and Sparta south through the North Sea and into the English Channel.
The Royal Navy ships worked in tandem with NATO allies to monitor the Russian task group’s activity, ensuring their movements were tracked from the North Sea through the English Channel before handing over monitoring duties to a NATO ally off the coast of France near Ushant. HMS St Albans Commanding Officer, Commander Oli Ayers, emphasized that this operation was part of the UK’s response to increased Russian activity within UK waters.
