Russian Diesel Heads To US Despite Ukraine Backlash: 3 Tankers Set Sail Under Trump-Putin Deal; What We Know

Three tankers carrying Russian diesel fuel departed from the Russian port of Primorsk for North America with Russia hoping to resume the supply of fuel to the US after a period of more than three years of break, according to an announcement made by a Russian deputy prime minister in connection with the agreement that the country made with the US.

According to Reuters, Novak announced the resumed exports of fuel by Russia as it attempts to provide fuel supply to the US two weeks following the President Trump’s declaration of a diesel fuel agreement with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin through a phone call. “First three fuel tankers are already making their journey to the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean with RDIF (Russian Direct Investment Fund)’s great help,” Reuters quoted Novak.

Russian Diesel Shipment To US: 40,000 Tonnes In First Cargo

It is the first time when Russia sends its oil products to the US in form of 40,000 metric tonnes of ultra-low sulphur diesel that amounts to 300,000 barrels of oil. The cargo is loaded at Primorsk on October 22 according to the data of ship tracking. It makes 7% of four million barrels of diesel that are used in America daily.

Trump-Putin Diesel Deal: What Does The Agreement Involve?

The agreement that was announced on October 9 is geared towards the resumption of Russian diesel supplies to the US and other markets. Within this framework, Russia will have to lift its voluntary ban on diesel supply while the US will agree to provide a temporary exemption from sanctions concerning Russian fuel shipments.

Criticism And Concerns From US Lawmakers And Ukraine

The accord has received backlash from both the US and Ukraine. The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the agreement, calling it a “weak decision by strong partners.” Critics from both Republicans and Democrats have expressed concerns about allowing Russian oil imports while Moscow wages its war on Ukraine.

According to the critics, the new energy relations might serve as an additional source of income for Russia while the country’s opponents attempt to limit its capacity to fund the war. On the other hand, the benefits of extra fuel supplies for the US are unclear, and it remains to be seen how this deal will impact the global energy market.
