Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 Hits Record Output as Exports to China Rise Despite Sanctions Threats
Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project has reached record production levels since its launch in December 2023, supported by exports to China, even as winter ice threatens to halt shipments along the Northern Sea Route and the G7 prepares new sanctions targeting Moscow. Bloomberg reported on October 1 that the facility achieved an average daily output of 17.9 million cubic meters—about 14% higher than its previous peak in August.
The surge in production is largely attributed to increased exports to China, with seven tankers carrying LNG from Arctic LNG 2 unloading at the Beihai terminal in southern China since late August. Another vessel is currently en route, according to ship-tracking data. Most of these shipments were routed via the Koryak FSU floating storage unit off Kamchatka, which has handled LNG from Arctic LNG 2 since last year.
Logistics Challenges Hamper Direct Shipments
Limited availability of Arc7-class icebreaking tankers restricts direct shipments from the Arctic to Asia to summer and early autumn. This highlights the logistical challenges of Arctic LNG transport. The reliance on floating storage units like Koryak FSU underscores the need for efficient logistics solutions to ensure a steady supply of LNG to global markets.
Sanctions Compliance Raises Questions
Earlier, a Chinese container vessel has been documented visiting the Russian-occupied port of Sevastopol at least three times over the past month. This raises questions about sanctions compliance and maritime oversight. While China‘s involvement in Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project may not directly violate existing sanctions, it remains to be seen how these transactions will be viewed by international authorities.
As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, the success of Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to increasing its natural gas production and exports. However, the challenges posed by winter ice and logistical constraints highlight the need for innovative solutions to ensure a reliable supply of LNG to global markets.
