Sabetta

The Sabetta terminal is strategically located on the Yamal Peninsula, along the Ob Bay in the Russian Arctic. This location is pivotal for accessing the vast natural gas reserves of the Yamal region. The terminal was developed as part of the Yamal LNG project, a joint venture involving major stakeholders such as Novatek, TotalEnergies, and CNPC. Construction of the terminal began in the early 2010s, with the first LNG cargo shipped in December 2017. The infrastructure at Sabetta includes a state-of-the-art LNG plant with three production trains, each capable of producing millions of tonnes of LNG annually. The terminal features a jetty designed to accommodate ice-class LNG carriers, enabling year-round operations despite the harsh Arctic climate. The terminal’s operations are supported by an extensive fleet of icebreaker vessels, ensuring safe navigation through the ice-covered waters. Sabetta plays a crucial role in Russia’s strategy to increase its share in the global LNG market, providing a direct route for LNG exports to Europe and Asia via the Northern Sea Route.
