US Navy Intercepts Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker Sevan Off Iran

The U.S. Navy carried out an operation to intercept the Russian tanker Sevan, a vessel belonging to the so-called shadow fleet that was transporting Iranian energy supplies. The mission took place on Saturday, April 25, using a helicopter launched from the deck of the guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney (DDG 91). Following the interception, the Russian crew followed instructions from U.S. military personnel, forcing the tanker to change course and head back toward Iranian waters.

The Sevan is one of 19 vessels listed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury as part of the shadow fleet, targeted for involvement in illicit schemes moving Iranian gas and petroleum products—including propane and butane—worth billions of dollars. Russia and Iran rely on such ships to circumvent international sanctions.

Sanctions and Global Repercussions

The interception of the Sevan highlights Washington’s strategy to combat illegal energy and drug trafficking operations that undermine global security. These actions are part of a broader campaign to tighten control over maritime routes and take punitive measures against nations that flout international sanctions. Operations of this nature could significantly affect global trade routes and the dynamics between countries involved in the conflict.

Since the start of the blockade by U.S. forces, a total of 37 vessels have been intercepted and redirected, according to CENTCOM. On April 24, the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) also reported the destruction of a narco-terrorist vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The recent interception of the Sevan underscores the escalating tensions in maritime operations, particularly as U.S. forces are also actively targeting Iranian vessels.
