Operation Blue Intruder boarded the vessel overnight from Saturday to Sunday with 93 soldiers and one dog, taking full control of the bridge by 1:11 a.m. Inspectors from the Directorate-General for Shipping diverted the ship to Zeebrugge and identified 45 violations, technical defects, and a passenger ban, with the shipowner responsible for crew welfare.
Defense Minister Theo Francken said the operation enforces EU sanctions and protects the North Sea, while the Russian embassy in Belgium did not immediately reply and Moscow called such seizures acts of piracy.
