Russian Tanker Boracay Detained in France Amid Drone Incursions Over Denmark

Crew Failed to Comply with Maritime Authorities

A Russian tanker, Boracay, has been detained by French authorities after failing to comply with maritime regulations. The vessel is suspected of being involved in the launch of mysterious drones that flew over Denmark last week.

The tanker is now anchored off the French port of Saint-Nazaire, where it was boarded by French military personnel on September 27, as confirmed by government officials.

Part of Broader Shadow Fleet Operations

The Boracay, previously named Pushpa and Kiwala and operated under a Benin flag, is part of a larger network of ships used to circumvent international sanctions against Russia. The vessel is under UK and EU sanctions targeting Russia’s oil exports.

The detention of the tanker signals a stricter approach by French authorities in enforcing maritime regulations. This move comes as tensions between Russia and Western nations continue to escalate over issues such as Ukraine and energy security.

Enforcement Action Signals Stricter Approach

The enforcement action against Boracay is seen as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression. The vessel’s suspected involvement in drone incursions over Denmark has raised concerns about potential hybrid attacks on NATO air defenses.

The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War has linked Russia to a series of drone provocations across Europe, suggesting Moscow may be probing NATO air defenses ahead of any future conflict with the alliance.

Despite this, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the drone incursions as “a hybrid attack.” The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation among NATO member states in responding to emerging security threats.

According to reports, Boracay entered Danish waters on September 22 and remained there until September 25, during which time unknown drones were repeatedly spotted over military facilities.
