Ukraine’s Naval Forces Strike Russian Oil Tanker in Black Sea
Ukraine’s naval forces have struck another major blow against Moscow’s economic lifeline, hunting down and heavily damaging a prized asset of Russia’s “shadow fleet” in the Black Sea.
On the morning of July 8, an explosives-laden Ukrainian “Sea Baby” naval drone successfully ambushed the Blue, a massive Suezmax-class oil tanker, according to an official statement from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), News.Az reports, citing RBC-Ukraine. The high-stakes interception took place near the coast of temporarily occupied Yalta, an area sitting squarely within Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone.
Russian Military Aircraft Scramble in Response
Russian military aircraft frantically scrambled to intercept and destroy the incoming sea drone before it could reach its target, but the agile watercraft evaded the aerial assault. Despite this, the Sea Baby struck the stern of the tanker, causing significant damage to the vessel, as confirmed by the SBU.
Sanctioned Vessel’s Role in Russia’s Energy Smuggling
The Blue is a massive vessel capable of moving immense volumes of crude oil and petroleum products. Because of its active role in helping the Kremlin bypass global energy blockades, the tanker is heavily sanctioned by the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Ukraine. Russia relies heavily on these secret, under-the-radar shadow tankers to transport its oil across global waters, generating billions of dollars in illicit revenue used directly to finance its ongoing military aggression.
International Law and Ukrainian Military Strategy
Ukrainian officials made it clear that these commercial vessels lose their civilian protections the moment they fund the Kremlin’s war machine. “From the standpoint of international law, as well as the laws and customs of war, such vessels are entirely legitimate military targets,” the SBU stated. “Every successful strike against them reduces the Kremlin’s oil revenues, increases the cost of Russian military logistics, and weakens Russia‘s financial capacity.” This marks the second time in less than a month that Kyiv has successfully targeted Russia’s maritime energy smuggling operations, following a similar strike on another sanctioned shadow tanker on June 17.
